Introduction

My name is Emma Knight and I am a pre service student studying at the University of Regina. I grew up here in Regina, and I appreciate the diversity present in this wonderful city. This pushes me to help spread knowledge of the many cultures and communities. I enjoy sports and volunteering at different programs around the city of Regina and surrounding areas. I have participated in coaching sports such as cheerleading and soccer and have been a part of youth advisory committees, student councils, music clubs, and youth groups at Saskabilities. This type of participation helped drive me to be where I am today.

Pre Internship

I decided to start this post by saying that I think I missed 2 weeks and 4 days. I say this because my pre internship experience went by so fast that I am sure I just blinked. I learned a lot from this experience and I am very grateful for having the chance to learn from it.

The first big thing I noticed was that you cannot have a solid plan. With report cards and the classroom having other projects, I was constantly changing my plans and figuring out new ways to get my lesson across to the students. I learned how to do this pretty quickly and actually enjoyed it. It showed me that I didn’t have to have perfect plans all of the time because it is most likely to take a new direction anyways.

The second big thing I had learned from this was that each student has different needs. We get told this all of the time at the University but actually experiencing it is when you get an understanding. I liked the challenge of being able to get the students that have no interest in being there and I liked the accomplished feeling.

Overall, I was very worried to walk in to the school and decide that it was not for me. I believe that we have not really had the school experience up until the 3 week block. I was not sure what to expect or what I would learn. I loved being able to create the relationships and teach my knowledge to the students. I enjoyed being able to participate in the classes and I enjoyed getting up in the morning knowing that today would be different than the last. I am very excited to start my internship and see where the next journey takes me.

Treaty Education – After the Meeting

I just completed the meeting with Mike and let me tell you! I was very nervous walking into this. I was not sure where to even start and I was hoping he would some what help guide me through this conversation. Within the first 10 minutes I knew this was going to be a fast meeting because I had a lot to say.

The first questions asked was how could I be confident with teaching treaty education? I believe the answer to this is just time and experience. It is not something I can change over night. I spent the first 12 years of my life not living here and then the next 6 learning about Indigenous peoples in the news. I heard never ending bad things about the Indigenous and this definitely made me have a negative mindset. Then going to university and learning that I would have to take Indigenous studies is the first time I ever had interest in the topic. I look back now and judge my ignorance and just think about how simple minded I truly was. The first class when my prof said white people suck was the first time I listened to more than just what the news had to say. I have been opening my mind and battling my demons since. This is not something I will ever truly be able to stop but recognizing my own racism is a start. Going back to the question, I think time and experience is huge with being more confident. I like the opportunity to participate in events and searching resources.

The second question asked about barriers in teaching treaty education. I used my background with racism to answer this question. I think you need to do more than reach your students as parents are just as much as an influence. Students start hearing what the students are saying and make understanding almost right away. They will come to our classroom with their own mindset which we have to question. I think reaching the parents by also offering them resources will be a start to solving this problem. Another barrier I see is the fact that I will never fully understand the pain the Indigenous peoples have ever felt. I can’t just tell me students that it sucked for them. I think giving them experience and seeing first hand the culture will help a lot in recognizing the Indigenous peoples as people! This is also something that cannot be changed in one night. This will take time and effort but I think it will be very beneficial.

The last question was how will I prepare for the future? I will start by putting time into looking at resources to use for the classroom. I will also put more time and effort into participating in events that are held around the city. I like this one because I find the culture incredible and I think it is very beneficial in seeing the Indigenous peoples as people!

I think the overall meeting went great! I was nervous and thought an hour was a very long time but it went by really fast. I liked that I could get out some things that I don’t think I could in front of my class mates. I also appreciated the coffee!! This meeting was great for me as it helped get some thoughts straight and ask questions. It was definitely something I would be interested in doing again.

Treaty Education – Before the Meeting

Walking into class the first day and sitting down, I was nervous and excited. That was until Mike said we would individually have meetings with him about Treaty Education. I personally feel like I have had demons to fight, with this entire subject. Going through school I did not learn anything about indigenous peoples or Canada’s dark history. However, I did learn through the media which I now know often misrepresents Indigenous peoples. This completely threw me off when I found out that Indigenous peoples are not criminals that use others. They went through never ending pain that still effects generations today.

My overall thought and concern is how to teach treaty education to students that may have been in my same situation and being able to teach treaty education with the justice it deserves. My struggles has been trying to see the stereotypes and false representations that have been put into my head over the years and switch it to understand the culture better and the continuing pain. This has been improved over time because I have had the opportunity to take classes and attend camps about treaty education. I also have had the opportunity to volunteer for the NAIG. This still doesn’t mean I am fully confident in teaching my students treaty education correctly or with the full potential. I think in general the idea of treaty education is just intimidating.

I would like to take the time to talk to other teachers about how they are including treaty education into their teaching. I was also like to talk to Indigenous peoples and ask what they think. I think creating these kind of relationships is a great beginning to feeling more confident teaching treaty education.

 

Group Lesson Planning

I have worked in pairs before to create lesson plans, but never more than that.. and it is hard!! In fact, my group started to get snappy at each other because we were all on completely different pages and had no idea how to compromise. What got us was the the indicator because we had not fully agreed on what we thought the outcome was trying to say. When we got to take a break and come back to it, it really helped. We had a chance to calm down and consider our ideas and thoughts and put them together better. We back tracked and started again with the outcome. I think that by fully grasping what the outcome, we could then work together better. It also tells me that the outcomes are very vague and can be taken in numerous directions.

The Ice age to The Indigenous peoples!

Even though this does not connect to my ideal museum lesson, I needed to bring it to attention because it really bothered me. The Indigenous people came across as extinct because of the layout. I thought this almost instantly because right before that, there was an ice age exhibit full of bones. So before my students and I attend the museum, we will be talking about the problems that are still happening today.

For the actual museum visit, the students will start by taking a walk around once or twice of the Indigenous part. They would have the chance to look what interests them. After the students have looked around, I will introduce the idea of a creating a scrap book that they will work on for the next couple of weeks. Each student will pick an area that interests them and will spend the rest of the time reading about it, taking pictures, asking questions, and maybe even draw it. Once done, we will go back to the classroom, we will do a class scrap book. We will work on this scrap book and look more in-depth into the subjects.

The Art Gallery!

Today, I took my first field trip as Miss Knight! I used to love field trips as a student but not as a teacher. It was CHAOTIC! However, the students that were supposed to be the trouble makers were the ones mostly into the activities. Our troubles were the students that just did not care for the activities or the rules. To manage the students, we asked them to stay clear of the art work and to walk to a straight line. The tour guides also expressed that students need to be quiet out of respect to the other art lovers.

Students completed three activities during this trip and were allowed to finish by watching a part of a movie. The first activity was in pairs, one student would be the picture and the other student would be the painter. students had the chance to use black and white paint to create a part of a black and white movie. We only had 15 minutes to complete this activity so students did not really have the chance to make a big mess. The only thing I noticed was instructions had to be repeated a lot! The second activity was sketching a piece of art work by copying it. This meant quiet for about 10 minutes. The third activity was the students favourite. The students would get into pairs and draw each other by not taking the pencil off of the page and not looking at the paper. The students loved this because of the outcome of the picture.

Overall, I experienced the different side of a trip and it was exhausting. Constantly having to count students and reminding them of the rules and just making sure everyone was ok is a lot!

Iodine Stains?

For my lesson today, I taught a science lab about the differences between animal and plant cells. I started my lesson off with a power point. Science is the first class of the day and the students usually rush in all at once. So for my first slide, I put Instructions telling the students to come in, clean off their desks, and grab a pencil. This has worked for me in the past but today my coop was late. I did not have a power point. I quickly adapted by asking all students to stop what they were doing and listen. I explained what they had to do and right away praised the students that did it. The other students then quickly followed. After, I introduced the lesson and used an actual microscope instead of the picture I had planned. I asked the students to tell me what each part was and how it worked.

What a crazy start! It worked out because my coop showed up and I could use my power point. I had to jump around a little bit because I had started with the microscope instead of the lab instructions. To keep the class flowing smoothly,I split the students up into groups by numbering them off and asked each group to send one person to grab a microscope and one or two people to grab the rest of the materials. All of the materials were spread out across the room so there was not a big group of students fighting for materials.

The students loved the lab and I saw many of the students that usually do not participate, be the leader of the group. The students took it in turns looking into the microscope and trying to focus it. I heard many great comments about what was in the cells and how they worked.

Overall, I think this lesson plan went well. Now, there is one question you might still be asking. Iodine stains? Yes it does. I found out when I was making the iodine and water solution. It stains your hands yellow and it takes about 5 hand washes to wash it off.
